Why AI answers look broken when you paste them
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity write in Markdown: ## for headings, **text** for bold, - for bullets, pipes for tables. Chat windows render it, but the clipboard carries the raw characters, so Word, Google Docs, Outlook and Notion show the symbols instead of formatting. Fixing that by hand — deleting asterisks, re-applying heading styles, rebuilding tables — is slower than the answer took to generate.
The two-second version
- In the chat, click the Copy icon under the answer (this copies the Markdown, not the rendered text).
- Paste it into the editor above. The preview shows the finished document.
- Choose Download .docx for Word, Save as PDF, or Copy for Google Docs and paste into an open Doc, email or Notion page.
What gets fixed
- Headings become real Word heading styles, so the navigation pane and table of contents work.
- Bullet and numbered lists become proper lists — numbering restarts for each list, sub-points indent correctly.
- Comparison tables from the AI become real tables with a header row.
- Bold and italic apply as formatting, links become clickable, code snippets keep a monospace font.
Good prompts for documents you plan to export
Ask the assistant for "a document with a title, section headings and bullet points" and to "use a Markdown table for the comparison". Avoid asking for emoji headers or unusual characters if the document is going to a formal audience. If the answer spans several messages, paste them one after another into the editor — headings keep the sections distinct.
Privacy
Many AI answers contain company or personal information. This page does not send your text anywhere: the conversion runs inside the browser tab, and you can verify that by disconnecting from the network after the page loads.
